Molton Brown

A brand trusted by everyone but desired by no one, revived by returning to its artisan roots.

→ Culture

Molton Brown was trusted everywhere and wanted almost nowhere. The dependable gift, the good hotel soap. In luxury that's a slow death, because desire earns a premium and trust alone doesn't.

The way back was in the brand's own past. It began in 1971 as a salon on South Molton Street, where the founders hand mixed botanical products in the basement, grew their own herbs, ran a vegetarian kitchen, and refused the chemical shortcuts the industry took for granted. They were doing what discerning shoppers now seek out, decades before it had a name. Fifty years of global rollout had buried all of it.

→ Creativity

The brief was a rebrand. The real job was to be honest about what the brand had always been. We put the perfumers' artistry at the centre, the creative freedom that had quietly made the products good but had never been the story. Handwriting through the design pointed back to the hand mixed beginnings. Casting and photography were warm and human rather than the polished anonymity of the category. The hard part was keeping that handmade feeling honest across seventy countries, the discipline most brands this size lose.

From that came two enduring franchises. Artists of Note invited three British artists, punk poet Dr John Cooper Clarke, fashion designer Nicholas Daley, and jeweller Gala Colivet Dennison, to interpret Molton Brown's fragrances through their own work, with full creative freedom.

The Christmas editorial franchise, Gifting is the Art of Knowing, carried a harder brief. Hold the tastemaker audience while staying warm and open enough for everyone choosing a gift. We built it on a simple truth, that a real gift requires knowing someone deeply.

→ Commerce

Both editorial franchises still run today, the clearest proof the strategy held. Kao made Artists of Note the cornerstone of its global growth strategy for Molton Brown, committing to the fragrance first positioning as the brand's long term direction. Fragrance mix and travel retail performance rose notably after the New Brand World launch, and the campaign has since travelled into Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Macao.
